From Old French Theobald, Tibaut; both ultimately derived from Proto-West Germanic *Þeudubalþ. Common in the Middle Ages under various spellings in the archaic pronunciation. After it became obsolete a spelling pronunciation took over. Compare Old English Þēodbald.
